Editor's First Pages Feedback with Kat Brzozowski Monday August 14th 7pm-8pm

Editor's First Pages Feedback with Kat Brzozowski Monday August 14th 7pm-8pm

We all know how crucial first pages are when it comes to catching the eyes of agents, editors, and readers.

But what makes a first page work, and how do you make yours shine?

Senior editor Kat Brzozowski from Feiwel & Friends at Macmillan Childrens Publishing Group will read first pages submitted by attendees before the webinar and provide feedback and improvements. From voice to character to plot and everything in between, this will be a comprehensive and instructive webinar on first pages from someone who knows what makes an audience keep reading.

Registration for the workshop only: $15

Registration for the workshop AND 20-minute critique of your first 10 pages: $75

REGISTER HERE: https://www.scbwieasternny.org/first-pages-event

After you register, you will have the opportunity to submit your first page through a Google form (link will be included in your confirmation email.) Kat will choose a selection of pages to give feedback on during the call.

Even if you don't submit a page, come to learn how writers make first pages shine!

Presenter bio:

Kat Brzozowski is a senior editor at Feiwel & Friends, an imprint of Macmillan Childrens Publishing Group, where she has worked since 2016 after seven years at St. Martin's Press. She has edited a wide range of titles, including Anna-Marie McLemore’s When the Moon was Ours and The Mirror Seasonboth longlisted for the National Book Award, and new Fear Street books in R.L. Stine’s best-selling series, which has sold over eighty million copies worldwide. Kat is looking to acquire young adult fiction, especially contemporary, realistic YA with a strong hook; dark, contemporary fiction; and mysteries, suspense and thrillers. When it comes to speculative elements, she looks for projects mostly rooted in the real world. In the picture book and middle grade space, she is drawn to stories she's never seen before that feel both timeless and timely. Across the board, she's drawn to authors who bring a new perspective to their readers.

Kat will be open to unagented submissions for a limited time after the event from attendees.

There are also critique slots available (20 min Zoom call critique for 10 pages of ms) for an additional $60.

Picture Books: Emotional Nonfiction—What is it?

Emotional Nonfiction Picture Books: What is it?

Date/Time
Date(s) - 06/220/2023
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Register here: https://easternny.scbwi.org/events/emotional-nonfiction-picture-books-what-is-it/

Nonfiction picture books are often an easier sell. There are so many potential markets, and facts are less subjective than fiction. But Emotional Nonfiction takes nonfiction to a whole new level, playing with format and weaving the strategies of fiction into facts to help young readers fall in love with our world. If you can make someone care, they will follow you anywhere.

One week before the workshop, writers can submit a pitch or log line (50 words max) for a nonfiction picture book. Or participants can write one during the workshop. Writers will receive live feedback with suggestions for how to layer their idea to reach the heights of Emotional Nonfiction. There will be time in the workshop to revise and resubmit.

In-workshop completion of a planning tool will also help writers clarify and level up their premise and think deeply about their pitch package to agents and publishers.

Live feedback will be given.

A list of mentor texts and handouts will be provided.

Lisa Lerner has been writing children’s stories for educational publishers such as Scholastic and McGraw Hill for more than 20 years. Her first Emotional Nonfiction early reader, AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD (Heinemann) is the true story of her daughter’s fifth grade teacher’s expedition to the Arctic. Lisa is also the author of the crossover YA novel JUST LIKE BEAUTY (New York Times Notable Book of the Year, currently in development with Lars Von Trier and Patriot Pictures as a movie shooting in 2023). Long ago, Lisa was a professional rubber stamp cutter, children’s party entertainer, and NYC performance artist. She is a proud member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, The Writers Grotto in San Francisco, and is currently serving as a trustee on the board of the Kingston Public Library. In her spare time, she enjoys petting rabbits and eating cake. Please visit www.lisalerner.com to learn more.

Writing Series Fiction: Chapter Books & Lower Middle Grades

April 25

6:30-8:30pm

James Preller is a widely published children’s author, with work ranging from picture books to YA. His titles include Bystander, Blood Mountain, The Courage Test, and Six Innings. He is also a successful series author: Jigsaw Jones Mysteries, Scary Tales, The Big Idea Gang, and — new from Scholastic — Exit 13. He blogs regularly at www.Jamespreller.com

 This engaging and interactive workshop:

* Examines a variety of series options, each operating under unique rules (from “Twilight Zone” to Roadrunner, Junie B. Jones to The Magic Treehouse, Goosebumps to Exit 13).

* Offers students writing and sharing opportunities.

* Encourages open discussion, questions, and shared information from the collective wisdom of the room.

* Explores how to take a single book idea and make it series worthy.
